What's the Ekasi Life Project?

Introduction and history
We started off in July 2008 when we took part in the young man campaign at raising awareness about the problem experiences by young man in our community especially drugs, alcohol, violence and woman abuse. These are the problems that lead young man to school dropouts and unemployment on our communities.

In July 2008 we attended a youth festival that was hosted by “Diggz youth alive” project. The aim of the festival was to create and ensure a platform for all organized working class youth to engage key issues that affect them and enable youth to share ideas and experiences, the event motivated us and also some of our staff did a six weeks course at “Etafeni Day Care Centre” where we attended a life skills program called “Fit For Life-Fit For Work”.

Our visions and Aims
The organization main aim is to empower, educate and mobilize young man in our communities around Nyanga East and other areas around.

To get young man to discuss and find solutions to the challenges and difficulties that they are facing in our communities and at home.

And to help them to organize and conduct awareness programs on issues such as drugs, alcohol, violence and woman abuse (e.g. rape, sex and sexuality, gender violence, HIV/AIDS and conflict resolving).

To organize events and activities around the communities where they stay to raise awareness about the problems that young man experience by using substances and being involved in criminal activities.

And also to unite young man in our communities to work together in an organized fashion to solve their own problems through self help projects.

Also to select a number of young men who could serve as trainers or programs intended for them to develop and implement cross cultural programs.

Most important is to become a broader network of young men within the townships of Cape Town and try to eradicate crime and drugs and alcohol abuse and interact with the CPF looking at eradicating bad element of police force in our communities and Cape Town in general.
