Schreibt uns gerne eine E-Mail - info(at)multiformes.de

News from Thabo

I've received an email from Thabo. He is with his sister in Gauteng/Johannesburg right now:

"I hope you're well, I'm ok this side. I just wanted to tell you that I am involve in a Worl cup project in Gauteng for the next few months. This side I'm staying with my sister. I manage to get 100 tickets to take 89 under 18 and 11 over 18youth to a match on the 24 June at Ellispark Satdium. I'm currently trying to get the parents to sign the consent forms as I have to send this back to the Grass roots office in Cape Town by next week Tuesday.

I must say I didn't think I could pull this of in Gauteng (Johannesburg) but things are looking good. We will need to do another film here too. I've asked my sister to help with this since I have not yet been able to set up an office. This in now our next step setting up an office where youth can come for information and enquiries.

I was thinking of getting a container since renting an office will be expensive and buying a second hand container will be much cheaper and I will set it up at my sister's yard and we will not have to pay rent there. We will need to have a computer, printer and a telephone line."

What's the Ekasi Life Project?

Introduction and history
We started off in July 2008 when we took part in the young man campaign at raising awareness about the problem experiences by young man in our community especially drugs, alcohol, violence and woman abuse. These are the problems that lead young man to school dropouts and unemployment on our communities.

In July 2008 we attended a youth festival that was hosted by “Diggz youth alive” project. The aim of the festival was to create and ensure a platform for all organized working class youth to engage key issues that affect them and enable youth to share ideas and experiences, the event motivated us and also some of our staff did a six weeks course at “Etafeni Day Care Centre” where we attended a life skills program called “Fit For Life-Fit For Work”.

Our visions and Aims
The organization main aim is to empower, educate and mobilize young man in our communities around Nyanga East and other areas around.

To get young man to discuss and find solutions to the challenges and difficulties that they are facing in our communities and at home.

And to help them to organize and conduct awareness programs on issues such as drugs, alcohol, violence and woman abuse (e.g. rape, sex and sexuality, gender violence, HIV/AIDS and conflict resolving).

To organize events and activities around the communities where they stay to raise awareness about the problems that young man experience by using substances and being involved in criminal activities.

And also to unite young man in our communities to work together in an organized fashion to solve their own problems through self help projects.

Also to select a number of young men who could serve as trainers or programs intended for them to develop and implement cross cultural programs.

Most important is to become a broader network of young men within the townships of Cape Town and try to eradicate crime and drugs and alcohol abuse and interact with the CPF looking at eradicating bad element of police force in our communities and Cape Town in general.

Who are our participants for the project?
Young men and boys from the age of 18yrs to 35yrs

Other activities that will be implemented:
  • Life skill programs where there will be discussions about:
  • Sex and Sexuality
  • Gender violence
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Parental skills
  • Conflict resolving

Es geht voran / It's progressing well

Today I received an email from Thomas Schoppa who works for the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Cape Town (http://www.kapstadt.diplo.de/Vertretung/kapstadt/en/Startseite.html).

Thabo and his friends are receiving some help from this side. The organization "New World Foundation" (http://www.newworldfoundation.org.za) is involved, too. Right now they are trying to help out with some technical equipment for a car wash as well as street cleaning work equipment so that Thabo and his youth groups can earn some money.

Besides that the organization and the consulate general modernised a day care centre in Nyanga, bought new toys, clothes and street soccer equipment. The "New World Foundation" provided some soccer balls and is helping out with the training program. It's a very great opportunity for Thabo and I hope he will get more help to mobilize even more people of his community.
